OUR GROWERS

Our growers work hard around the clock, every day of the week, to make sure that our clients and consumers have a continual supply of delicious produce.

Their efforts mean we can guarantee a stable supply of fresh mushrooms, soft fruit and veg throughout the year, whatever the weather or market circumstances.

This is sometimes done in challenging circumstances, but always with a commitment to sustainability and stewardship of our environmental resources.

Our dedicated growers are passionate about their produce and have a long history of growing. It’s more than just a business – many of them are family operations  spanning two or three generations. 

 
 
 
Cappagh Mushrooms

Established: 1988

“The business was started by by 3 brothers, Declan, Gary and Aiden when they were 17,18,and 19 years old. They started off with 3 tunnels. Back then the mushrooms were grown on bags and all the packing and casing by hand had to be done after the day job in the evenings and at weekends. Their dad, Aiden senior and mother Elizabeth were always on hand with sound advice and manual labour!! Over the years, they progressed to 7 tunnels and Gary and Aiden pursued other businesses. Johnny joined Declan and in 2001 they updated the shelving system and in 2010 the last 3 tunnels were erected bringing the total to 10.”

Phillip has been growing mushrooms for over 26 years, and now works alongside his two sons, brother and nephew. 

“Over the last few years we have invested in several different projects to help us become more sustainable as a business and these have included projects in solar panels which we have found to be invaluable towards the running costs and also a woodchip boiler which again has been a great asset to our farm.”

“The farm is run by David, Eileen and their 2 sons Edward and Daniel. Currently producing mushrooms in 12 tunnels. Each year we try to make further investment on our site through the PO Scheme with CMP. In 2023 we installed a PV system which is helping with sustainability and reducing costs.”

“We've installed PV panels on-site, which has helped us significantly reduce our electricity consumption. We've also started using a new filling head, and it's made a big difference—disease levels have dropped considerably, and we've seen a noticeable increase in our yields per square metre.”

Established: 1926

Keelings is a third-generation family business operating and innovating in the fresh produce industry since 1926.

“Through our membership of CMP we have invested in heat pump technology which has reduced our CO2 emissions by 13%. In addition, the installation of LED lights has extended the season for Irish Strawberry production. The use of LED lights in our greenhouses to supplement natural light and grow fruit, particularly strawberries, throughout the year, including during the winter months when natural daylight is limited. This allows us to produce a wider variety of fruits and extend our harvest seasons. LED lighting offers energy efficiency, longer lifespan, and the ability to control the light spectrum, making it an effective and sustainable solution for growing soft fruits in glasshouses.”

Growing: We grow a wide range of salad leaves, leafy vegetables, and herbs. McCormack Family Farms is a leading Irish brand known for unwashed, chlorine-free, long-lasting leaves.

“In our first year as part of CMP, we’ve focused on precision farming initiatives including GPS systems, farm management systems, mapping, and health scoring. We’re proud to be a multi-award-winning second-generation farm, recognised as Ireland’s Best Family Business and honoured with Blas na hÉireann medals and Irish Quality Food Awards.

The company was founded by Edward and Laura McCormack, and is now run by their three sons: Stephen (Managing Director), Padraic (Procurement Manager), and Edwin (Farm Manager)”

McKenna Mushrooms

Rathfeigh, Tara, Co. Meath

Established: 2011

“McKenna Mushrooms is a family-run business located in Tara, Co. Meath. Being part of this co-op means I can focus on growing high-quality mushrooms. We're creating rural jobs, supporting local supply chains, and using innovative, sustainable growing methods. Through shared knowledge and funding support, our business was able to invest in 400 kWh of battery storage to complement the 193 kWh of flexible solar PV units installed on our site.”

“In 2023 we installed 300kW Supermax MultiFuel Boiler which replaces the use of oil as it burns wood pellets which helps heat the growing rooms, we have also insulated and recovered tunnels which has minimised the loss of heat from the tunnels all of this has helped us become more sustainable.”

"We are always striving to be sustainable, we have installed a 4 point chiller which heats our tunnels and doesn't cost us. We have upgraded our tunnels over the years and continue to do so which have all been done through CMP.”

“Across 2023 and 2024 we installed 150kw of solar panels. We have found this to be a great asset to our business in relation to sustainability and it has given us energy independence as we don’t have to rely on the grid in a power cut.”
